How Medow supports Prof Desmond Yip and his practice of 18 specialist doctors

When Prof Desmond Yip started using Medow in May 2025, National Capital Medical Specialists had two ways of getting letters typed: an in-house typist, and an outsourced service for the overflow.

Desmond spent three months using Medow in his own oncology clinics, and his colleagues saw the difference.

A busy Canberra practice, and a senior voice in private cancer care

National Capital Medical Specialists is a private physician practice in Canberra focused on haematology and medical oncology, as well as endocrinology and neurology.

Desmond is a Professor at the ANU Medical School and a former Clinical Director of Medical Oncology at The Canberra Hospital, with a research focus on gastrointestinal cancers and new cancer drug development. He is also Treasurer and a board member of the PCPA, the not-for-profit that represents more than 500 private cancer specialists and advocates for better access to treatment, drugs and research for private patients.

An AI that understands oncology

In oncology, regimens, drug names, staging and results all have to be right. What stood out to Desmond during his trial was how well Medow's specialty-specific model knew his field.

It’s converting things into oncological terms that we would be using. And it gets the drug names all right.

Complex cases are reviewed in under two minutes, and simpler ones in under 30 seconds.

The letter and the notes don’t require much tweaking.

Eye contact, and no more post-clinic worry

Desmond used to write in the medical record during each consult, then dictate the letter afterwards. Now the scribe listens and he writes nothing.

The patients actually love it because I’m making eye contact with them, talking to them without looking at my screen all the time.

It has also changed how his busiest days feel.

I don’t get stressed anymore even if my clinic’s overbooked, because I know the scribe’s taken everything on board.

He estimates Medow saves 30 minutes to an hour of paperwork per clinic day.

Straight back into Genie

Medow connects to Genie through a direct integration, which was one of the reasons the practice chose it. Patient lists sync in, and finished letters and notes sync back.

We didn’t want the staff to have to do other things like cutting, pasting or importing.

One person to call, not a ticket queue

Desmond knows how tech support usually works. A problem becomes a ticket, the ticket gets triaged, and a week or two later you might get something back.
